The BBB is issuing a warning about a new scam that affects Facebook users.
Victims will get a message in Facebook Messenger that looks like it's from a friend or family member.
In reality, it's a scammer that has hacked their account or created an account that looks just like theirs to steal their photos and personal information.
They're hoping you'll trust the contents of the message because it looks like it's coming from someone you know.
The scammer will send you a message saying you qualify for free money from the government or another organization.
The catch is that they want you to pay upfront. The con artist will say the money pays for delivery or processing.
Other versions of the scam will ask you to share personal information, such as your address or Social Security number.
If you get a message like this, you should immediately report it. There is an option to report messages within Facebook Messenger.
