Columbia State Community College has canceled its women's basketball program for the 2018-2019 season.

According to the college's communications office, the team's former coach left in May and they could not find a replacement.

Amy Spears-Boyd, director of communications, sent News4 this statement:

At the end of May, the women’s basketball coach, Bridget Goodnight, resigned her position. The preliminary review of the women’s basketball program indicated that it has struggled since 2008, game attendance is small and the college has had difficulty in the recruiting and retention of women’s basketball players. Therefore, the college has decided to inactivate the program for one year so that it can assess the effectiveness and the impact on student-athletes and the institution. The program will be reviewed and a decision made to the continuation of the program by December.

The college says the men's basketball program will continue as scheduled.
