A man was seriously injured after being struck by a driver in south Nashville early Wednesday morning.

Police officers found the victim lying along Lafayette Street near Charles E. Davis Boulevard just after 1:30 a.m. He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

A witness saw the crash happen and was able to give police a description of the car.

While a sergeant was on the way to the scene, he saw a car with front-end damage matching the description of the suspect's vehicle on Murfreesboro Pike.

Police say they arrested the suspected driver, Tekleab Bekuretsion. According to police, the 26-year-old was extremely intoxicated and was unaware he hit the victim. Blood was on the hood of his car.

Police identified the victim as 35-year-old Timothy Brito. Investigators believe Brito was hit under the Interstate 40 overpass as he was crossing Lafayette and was carried over 500 yards before falling to the pavement.

Bekuretsion was released from jail after posting a $4,500 bond.
